For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.
There are moments when the weight of others’ expectations feels heavy, like a cloak you can’t remove. The constant pull to fit in, to be liked, to be accepted can lead to an exhausting internal battle. Perhaps you find yourself caught in this cycle, where every decision feels scrutinized, and every choice is second-guessed. You want to be true to yourself, yet the desire to please others looms large, creating stress and confusion.
When we seek validation from others, we risk compromising our authenticity and, ultimately, our faith. The emotional toll this takes can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling inadequate and uncertain. We may even find ourselves altering our beliefs or actions to align with what we think others expect, leading to a life that feels disingenuous. This inner conflict reveals a deeper spiritual issue: our struggle to prioritize God’s approval over human validation.
This struggle is not new. The Apostle Paul faced similar pressures in his ministry, feeling the tension between God’s calling and the expectations of those around him. He boldly confronted this reality, stating that if he were still trying to please people, he would not be a servant of Christ. Paul recognized that the pursuit of human approval can divert us from our true purpose. His words echo through the ages, challenging us to reassess who we aim to please.
However, Paul’s message brings a powerful truth: aligning our lives with God’s truth frees us from the burden of others’ opinions. The call is not to abandon relationships or community but to ground our identity in Christ. When we choose to live for His approval, we empower ourselves to stand firm against external pressures. This choice is not always easy, but it is essential for spiritual growth.
In today’s world, where social media amplifies the need for approval, this message is more relevant than ever. The inner struggle of wanting to fit in while remaining true to oneself is a challenge many face. Yet, understanding our worth in God’s eyes can shift our perspective, allowing us to navigate relationships without losing our authenticity. It invites us to live boldly and embrace who we are as individuals created in His image.
As you move through your days, consider how you can intentionally seek God’s approval over man’s. This might mean making choices that reflect your values, even when they are not popular. It could involve speaking your truth in a meeting or standing firm in your beliefs, despite peer pressure. Each step toward authenticity is a step toward spiritual readiness.
In this journey, let us remember that our identity is not determined by others’ perceptions but by our Creator. Embrace the freedom that comes with aligning your life to please Him. The path may be challenging, but living authentically will lead to a peace that transcends human approval.

In what areas of your life do you feel pressured to seek approval from others instead of God?
Identify one decision this week where you can prioritize your values over others' expectations.
Lord, I confess that I often seek approval from those around me, letting their opinions shape my decisions. Help me to find my worth in You alone. Give me the courage to live authentically and to seek Your approval above all else. Amen.
